A bucket has 56 liters of water in it when it is 4/5 full. How much can it hold?
-------
Let "x" be the amount the bucket can hold.
-----------
Equation:
(4/5)x = 56
----
Multiply both sides by 5/4 to get:
x = (5/4)56
----
x = 5*(56/4) = 5*14 = 70 liters

ratio problem, when the bucket is full it will hold 5 out 5 or 5/5 which is 1 (as in 1 whole bucket. So x liters when the bucket is full.
56---4/5
x----1
Multiply across and you get
now solve for x
multiply each side by 5/4 so that you get x by itself
liters
