Two numbers are in the ratio 5:9. If their difference is 36 find the smaller number.
------
5:9 is the same as 5x:9x where 5x is the smaller number.
-------
Equation:
larger - smaller = 36
9x - 5x = 36
4x = 36
x = 9
--------
smaller = 5x = 5*9 = 45
