Question 818624: sara and simone together have 24 sweets, Sara and Josie together have 32 sweets. altogether the 3 girls have 42 sweets. how many sweets does Sara, Josie and Simone each have? How many sweets must Josie give to Simone if they are all to have the same number of sweets.
I have tried to answer: Sara has 14, Simone as 10 and Josie has 18 sweets and Josie should give 4 sweets to Simone.
But I don't know how to work out such problems using some formula
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
sara and simone together have 24 sweets, Sara and Josie together have 32 sweets. altogether the 3 girls have 42 sweets. how many sweets does Sara, Josie and Simone each have? How many sweets must Josie give to Simone if they are all to have the same number of sweets.
--------
Equations:
a + i = 24
a + j = 32
a + i + j = 42
----------------------
Substitute for "i" and for "j" and solve for "a":
a + 24-a + 32-a = 42
-a + 56 = 42
-a = -14
a = 14 (# of sweets Sara has)
----------------------
a+i = 24
14+i = 24
i = 10 (# of sweets Simione has)
--------
a + j = 32
14 + j = 32
j = 18 (# of sweets Josie has)
