5:7 is the same as 5x:7x where # of boys = 5x and # of girls = 7x
------
Equation:
5x + 7x = 60
12x = 60
x = 5
----
# of boys = 5x = 5*5 = 25

60 students, how many boys x

   | Cross Multiplying to solve

   7x = 5(60-x)

   12x = 300

     x = 25 boys in the class
