Divide 56 into two parts such that 3/8 of the larger number decreased by 6 equals 1/4 if the smaller number.
----
Equations:
x + y = 56
(3/8)x - 6 = (1/4)y
----------------------------
Modify:
3x + 3y = 3*56
3x - 48 = 2y
----------------------
Rearrange:
3x + 3y = 3*56
3x - 2y = 48
-----
Subtract and solve for "y":
5y = 120
y = 24
----
Solve for "x":
x + y = 56
x + 24 = 56
x = 32
--------------------
