Question 700840: Percentage: I don't understand this solution: In a recent town election,1860 people voted for either candidate A or candidate B for the position of supervisor. If candidate A received 55% of the votes, how many votes did candidate B recieve?
Answer by neatmath(302) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
With percentages, most times we are concerned with a 100% total.
In this case, we know that 55% of the 1860 people voted for Candidate A.
This means, if there is only one other Candidate,
that the other 45% of people voted for Candidate B.
100%-55%=45%
Now, since we know there were 1860 total people,
we simply multiply 1860 by 45% to find the actual number of votes for Candidate B:
(45%)*1860=?
(0.45)*1860=837
So 837 people voted for Candidate B, which makes sense in this context.
I hope this helps! Keep practicing! :)
