Gordons sporting goods had sold all its windbreaker jackets except one.
It was so ugly that no one wanted to buy it.
So Gordons but the jacket on sale for for 1/4 off the original price.
It still did not sell so they marked it down 1/3 off the sales price.
Still no one wanted to buy it so they marked the second sales price down 1/2.
Finally it sold for 12 dollars. What was the original price?
:
Let p = the original price,
write an equation using the value after each discount.
p * * * = 12
p * = 12
multiply both sides by 24
6p = 24(12)
6p = 288
p = 288/6
p = $48 is the original price
