At the place that gives him a 10% across the board discount, he is paying 90% of the total bill. At the other place he is paying $50 plus 80% of the total bill minus $50

Let represent the total cost of the required supplies. Then the first store is going to charge him



and the second store is going to charge him



For the given situation, plug in $187 for and then do the arithmetic. The smaller result is the better deal.
