the sum of one-half a number, one-third of the number, and one-twelfth of the number is 55. what is the original number?
Let x = the number
then
(1/2)x + (1/3)x + (1/12)x = 55
multiplying both sides by 12:
(6)x + (4)x + (1)x = 660
11X = 660
x = 660/11
x = 60
