The ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls in a club was 9:8.
Let # of girls be 9x
Then # of boys is 8x
--------------------------------------
1/2 of the number of girls left the club and there were 15 more boys than girls.
Equation:
8x = (1/2)9x + 15
8x = 4.5x + 15
3.5x = 15
x = 15/3.5
---
a. How many children were in the club at first?
9x+8x = 17x = 73 when rounded up
-------------
b. How many girls left the club?
4.5x = 20 when rounded up
