Question 499049: I think this problem is related to ratios. I think it's more of a probability question. My daughter asked me for help, but I'm not sure how to do it. Here's the problem:
Five hats are randomly distributed to the five people who own them. What is the probability tha ll the people received the correct hat?
I think the solution is the fraction of getting the right person for one hat is 1/5. With five hats I multiply 1/5 x 1/5 x 1/5 x 1/5x 1/5 which is 0.00032 or 1/3125. Please advise.
Thank you.
Dan

Not quite...there are 5! = 120 ways to assign five hats to people, and only one of these combinations is correct. The probability is 1/120.

No, that would have each hat returned to the set for the next person.
There are 5! = 5*4*3*2*1 ways to distribute the hats, only 1 totally correct.
So p=1/120.
