I may be totally wrong, but i got 18. Can you show me how to work this problem out step by step, i'm not that good in math and I'm trying to help my neice.

Let x = no. of muffins to start with
If you ate 1/3 of them, that leaves x, you gave away of this amt
:
x - ( * )x = 9
x - x = 9
:
Get rid of those annoying denominators, multiply by 12
12*x - 12*x = 12(9)
;
cancel out the denominators and you have
4(2x) - 2x = 108
8x - 2x = 108
6x = 108
x =
x = 18 muffins so you are right!!
