Question 464598: i want to know the formula to obtain answer to: how many ounces of a 15% alcohol solution must be mixed with 4 ounces of a 20% alcohol solution to make a 17% alcohol solution? I know the answer is 6 oz, but need to know how to figure it out.

Hi,

Let x represent the amount of 15% solution

Adding together to form 17% slution



          .03*4 = .02x

            .12/.02 = x

                x = 6 oz
