"A school has 1500 students. the ratio of females to males is 16 to 9. How many female students are there?"
1500 total students
Ratio of females to males is 16/9
Ratio of females to total is 16/25 {added 16 females and 9 males to get the 25}
16 females / 25 total = x females / 1500 total {set-up a proportion}
25x = 16(1500) {cross-multiplied)
25x = 24,000 {multiplied through}
x = 960 {divided both sides by 25}
there would be approximately 960 females
