Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
What number was subtracted from both the numerator and the denominator of the fraction 9/12 to make a fraction equal to 1/3?
----
Let the number subtracted be "x".
----
Solve:
(9-x)/(12-x) = 1/3
Cross multiply and solve for "x":
3(9-x) = 12-x
27-3x = 12-x
2x = 15
x = 7.5
