Question 390251: King Kong and Godzilla are both busy destroying cities. The ratio of cities destroyed by King Kong to those destroyed by Godzilla is 2:5. If the two together destroy a total of 35 cities, find how many cities each destroyed. Use the 5-step method. Remember to include a check

We are told that for every 7 cities, King Kong destroys 2 and Godzilla destroys 5.
In other words, King Kong destroys 2/7 of the cities and Godzilla destroys 5/7 of the cities.
Of the 35 cities, let x=number that King Kong destroys and let y=number that Godzilla destroys. Now we can set up ratios:
For King Kong:2/7=x/35
7x=70
x=10
CK
10/35=2/7
2/7=2/7
For Godzilla: 5/7=y/35
7y=175
y=25
CK
5/7=25/35
5/7=5/7
