A baker made 20 pies. A Boy Scout troop buys one–fourth of his pies,
a preschool teacher buys one–third of his pies, and a caterer buys one–sixth of his pies.
How many pies does the baker have left?
:
Let p = no. of pies left over
:
p = 20 - 20 - 20 - 20
Multiply by 12 to get rid of the denominators
12p = 12(20) - 3(20) - 4(20) - 2(20)
:
12p = 240 - 60 - 80 - 40
:
12p = 240 - 180
:
12p = 60
p =
p = 5 pies left over
