The sum of two numbers is 46,
x + y = 46
Or for substitution
x = (46-y)
:
and 1/4 the larger number exceeds 1/6 the smaller by 4.
x = y + 4
Multiply by 12 to get rid of the denominators, results
3x = 2y + 12(4)
3x = 2y + 48
from the 1st equation; substitute (46-y) for x
3(46-y) = 2y + 48
138 - 3y = 2y + 48
138 - 48 = 2y + 3y
90 = 5y
y =
y = 18
:
I'll let you find x; check solutions in the 2nd statement
