find common denominator, then add.
3 1/2+1 3/4
3 2/4+1 3/4=4 5/4= 5 1/4 total

Convert to improper fractions:
(2*3+1)/2 + (4*1+3)/4
---
7/2 + 7/4
---
Convert to a common denominator:
(14/4) + (7/4)
---
Add "like" terms to get:
