Hello,
There are two ways to do this problem. First off 20% can be written as .2 or 1/5. It's easier to multiply by .2, so it would look like this:
.2 times $7.00 = $1.40 therefore he'll get:
$8.40 per hour
If you were to use the fraction it would look like this:
1/5 times 7.00 will be:
7/5 Since the bar in the fraction means "divided by" we do:
7 divided by 5 = 1.4 or $1.40

He gets what he was getting before (100% = 1.00) plus 20% of what he was getting before. "of" means multiply, so 20% (and 20% = .20) of what he was getting before is 0.20 X 7.00.

You can do this one of two ways, multiply 0.20 times 7.00 and then add the result to 7.00

Or you can multiply 1.20 (which is 1.00 plus 0.20) times 7.00.

Comes out the same either way.
