Question 227003: A man and his wife earn $49,000 a year. The wife earns 40% of what his husband earns. In addition, their two children each earn 1/4 of what their father earns. How much does the family earn in 2 years?

The family makes $127,400 in 2 years.

First find the wife's yearly earnings by taking the total yearly earnings of $49,000 and multiplying it by 40%, (0.40) since that is how much of the husbands' earnings the wife makes. The wife earns $19,600 a year.

Then take the total years earnings of $49,000 and subtract the wife's earnings of $19,600 to get the husband's yearly income. The husband earns $29,400 a year.

To find how much each child makes, take the husband's yearly earnings of $29,400 and multiply it by 25%, (0.25) since it states they each make one fourth of their fathers' income. (1/4 is the same as 25%). So Each of the children make $7,350 a year.

Now, take the total yearly earnings of the husband and wife ($49,000) and multiply it by 2 years, then take the children's yearly income and multiply it by 4. (Since there are two children, the annual income of each must be multiplied twice, and considering they make the same amount you just multiply one of the childrens yearly earnings by 4 to simplify it.)

Now take the 2 year total income of the parents which was $98000 and add it to the 2 year total income of the kids which was $29,400 to receive the total family's earnings for 2 years. Which gives you the answer of $127,400.
