In a village, 5/8 of the population are adults, 1/2 of the adults are males, 4/5 of the adult females are illiterate.
If 400 females are illiterate, then the population of the village is:
:
adults = 5%2F8x
males = 1%2F2*5%2F8x = 5%2F16x are adult males
since half adults are male, we know
adult females = 5%2F16x also
and
female illiterates:
4%2F5* 5%2F16x = 400
20%2F80x = 400
reduce fraction
1%2F4x = 400
x = 4(400)
x = 1600 is the population of the village
