If 400 females are illiterate, then the population of the village is:
:
adults = x
males = *x = x are adult males
since half adults are male, we know
adult females = x also
and
female illiterates:
* x = 400
x = 400
reduce fraction
x = 400
x = 4(400)
x = 1600 is the population of the village
