Question 171360: A farmer husband and his wife raise a rooster and a hen in their backyard. After few months the rooster and the hen have

34 chicks. The wife told her husband to give ALL THE CHICKS to their children in this proportion:

1. ELDEST CHILD = 1/2

2. 2ND CHILD = 1/3

3. YOUNGEST CHILD = 1/9

The father agrees but with conditions that none of the chickens will be slaughtered and only the CHICKS are to be distributed to their children according to the above proportion. When the family did the partition they found out that it did not work. WHAT IS THE CORRECT PARTITION?

it appears that the original proportions took the rooster and the hen into consideration, but did not intend to apportion them as well.
34 + 2 = 36
1/2 of 36 = 18
1/3 of 36 = 12
1/9 of 36 = 4
18 + 12 + 4 = 34
-----
it's convoluted logic but it works.
-----
any other way of looking at it gets very messy.
34 / 36 is the same as 17/18
if you add up the percentages, you will find that they add up to 17/18.
perhaps that's how the farmer figured it out?
if you assume these numbers are what was intended to provide to the children, then the correct proportions would be:
eldest child gets 18/34
next eldest gets 12/34
youngest gets 4/34
-----
the other way of looking at is would be:
1/2 of 34 is 17 so eldest child gets 17.
1/3 of 34 is 11.33333 which doesn't work but if you round down then the next eldest gets 11.
youngest gets 1/9 which would be 3.777 would would round up to 4.
17 + 11 + 4 = 32 not equal to 34 so the original proportions would not work with the new denominator.
-----
i would give:
18 to the eldest
12 to the next eldest
4 to the youngest.
under the assumption that's what the farmer intended.
