a. In order to do this, you will need to figure out what percent of the people at the concert were adults. Since you know the ratio is 3:2, you know that 3 out of 5 people were adults (I got the 5 by adding the 3 and 2 together to get the total number of people). So, you know that 3/5 of the people were adults. Change this to a percent by first changing the fraction to a decimal (3 divided by 5, wich is .60). Then, change .6 to a percent by moving the decimal two places to the right (60%). You need to figure out what 60% of 480 is. Since "of" means to multiply in math, you can do .6 x 480 (I got .6 by changing the percent to a decimal). This equals 288...there were 288 adults at the concert.
b. If you think of last year's attendance as 100%, then you can think of this year's attendance as 120% (because this year was 20% more than last year). Set this up as an equation, and you get 120%n = 480. To solve, change the percent to a decimal (move the decimal two places to the left): 1.20n = 480. Then, solve the equation by dividing 1.20 by both sides. Your answer: 480 divided by 1.20 = 400 people.
