The solution from the other tutor is a good formal algebraic solution.

This particular type of problem can be solved more easily using an informal method.

The numerator of the original fraction is 4 less than the denominator; when 3 is added to both numerator and denominator, the numerator is still 4 less than the denominator.

The resulting fraction is equivalent to 3/4. In that fraction, the numerator is 1 less than the denominator. To get a fraction equivalent to 3/4 in which the numerator is 4 less than the denominator -- as required by the problem -- multiply numerator and denominator of the fraction 3/4 by 4 to get 12/16.

Then the fraction after adding 3 to both numerator and denominator is 12/16, which means the original fraction was 9/13.

ANSWER: 9/13
