Work Shown:

x = starting amount of money
x-75 = amount left after buying the shirts
(1/4)*(x-75) = amount spent on batteries
(3/4)(x-75) = amount leftover after buying the batteries

Note that 1/4 + 3/4 = 1 = 100% of his money

That last expression is set equal to (1/3)x because David is left with 1/3 of his original money.

(3/4)(x-75) = (1/3)x
12*(3/4)(x-75) = 12*(1/3)x
9(x-75) = 4x
9x-675 = 4x
9x-4x = 675
5x = 675
x = 675/5
x = 135
David started off with $135

Check:
Start = 135
Buy the shirts: 135-75 = 60 dollars left
(1/4)*60 = 15 dollars spent on batteries

x-75 -x/4 +75/4 =x/3
Rearrange and simplify
x-7x/12 = 75+75/4
5x/12 = 225/4
5x = 225*12/4
5x= 225*3
x = 45*3
x= 135
He had $ 135 before shopping

After spending ¼remainder, he then had: ¾remainder, or ¾(D  -  75), or  remaining
