"the ratio of girls to boys is 1 to 2" means we could have any of the following scenarios:
1 girl & 2 boys
2 girls & 4 boys
3 girls & 6 boys
4 girls & 8 boys
and so on

Whatever the number of girls there are, double it to get the number of boys.

Since we have 18 girls, we must have 2*18 = 36 boys

g = number of girls = 18
b = number of boys = unknown

g/b = 1/2
18/b = 1/2
18*2 = b*1
36 = b
b = 36 boys
