Question 1186670: Joe baked some custard tarts and fruit tarts. The ratio of the number of custard tarts to the number of fruit tarts was 5:4. After Joe sold 30 custard tarts and baked 96 more fruit tarts, the ratio of the number of custard tarts to fruit tarts was 1:2. How many custard tarts were left?

Virtually always, the easiest way to start on a problem like this given the ratio 5:4 is this:
Let 5x = original number of custard tarts
Let 4x = original number of fruit tarts
Then 5x-30 = ending number of custard tarts
and 4x+96 = ending number of fruit tarts
In the end, the ratio of the number of custard tarts to the number of fruit tarts was 1:2
ANSWER: The number of custard tarts at the end was 5x-30 = 5(26)-30 = 130-30 = 100
