let the total number of cards be
if Javier took of the cards while Kumar took
.......both sides multiply by
=> cards were there at first
=>Javier took
=> Kumar took

The algebra is always easier if you can form your equations without fractions.
Here is how I would solve this one.
Javier took 4/11 of the cards, so....
11x = number of cards
4x = number Javier took
therefore 11x-4x=7x = number Kumar took
Kumar took 9 more than Javier:
7x = 4x+9
3x=9
x=3
The total number of cards was 11x=33.
ANSWER: 33
