Throwing with the wind, a quarterback passes a football 70 ft in 1s.
Against the wind, the same pass would have traveled 50ft in 1s.
Find the rate of the pass and the rate and the rate of the wind.
:
let r = rate of the pass in still air
let w = rate of the wind
:
Write a distance equation for each pass, d = time * speed
1(r + w) = 70
1(r - w) = 50
same as
r + w = 70
r - w = 50
--------------addition eliminates w find r
2r = 120
r = 60 ft/sec is the rate of the pass in still air
then using the 1st equation
60 + w = 70
w = 70 - 60
w = 10 ft/sec the rate of the wind
:
You can check this in the 2nd equation
