Susan has  7x dollars;  Tommy has 3x dollars.



The governing equation is

    7x - 3x = 48   dollars.



which implies

    4x      = 48

     x      = 48/4 = 12.



ANSWER.  The dollars are  7*12 = 84 (Susan) and  3*12 = 36 (Tommy).
