x = sale price of second property
2x-40000 = sale price of first ($40,000 less than twice the second)

3% of the total sales was $9600:

.03x=9600, 3 % commission of x worth of sales.
x=320,000, the combined price
one is x, the other is 2x-40000
that some is 3x-40000=320000
3x=360000
x=$120,000 and 2x-40000=$200,000
$120L and $200K
