Question 11516: we have been working on this problem but cannot figure it out...
The ratio of the numerator to the denominator of a fraction is 1 to 3. If the numerator is increased by 4 and the denominator is decreased by 3, the fraction becomes 1/2. Find the original fraction.
Please help us to figure out the appropriate solution and how to get there!
Thank you in advance for your help!

Answer by askmemath(368)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the Numerator = X
Then denominator= 3X
Now numerator is increased by 4 =>Numerator = X+4
Denominator = 3X-3
(X+4)/(3X-3) = 1/2
2X+8 = 3X-3
X = 11
3X = 33
So your fraction is 1/3
Check:
11+4/33-3 = 15/30 = 1/2 Yay!!!
