Question 113412: My teacher gave me this problem in a review packet and I can't figure it out. It's probably very simple but I seem to be missing something. It reads...
There are 8 women for every 3 men at an inspiring teacher conference. If there are 680 more women than men, how many teachers are there total?

Answer by edjones(8007)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let y=number of men, y+680=number of women
(y+680)/y=8/3 Proportion
3(y+680)=8y multiply 3y times each side to eliminate fractions.
3y+2040=8y
5y=2040 subtract 3y from each side.
y=408 men
408+680=1088 women
1088+408=1496 teachers
Check
408/1088=3/8
