Question 112882: Lauren's watering can hold 2 and 7/8 gallons of water. She is watering the plants in her garden, which usually need 6 gallons of water. How many times will she need to fill up her plants?
Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I think you mean "----fill up her watering can----"???
once will give her 2 7/8 gal
twice will give her 4 14/8 or 5 6/8 or 5 3/4 gal---still not hardly enough
three times is the answer
ANOTHER WAY:
Let x=number of times that she needs to fill up her can
So, our equation to solve is
(2 7/8)x=6
2=16/8; 16/8+7/8=23/8 So:
(23/8)x=6 multiply both sides by 8
23x=48 divide both sides by 23
x= 2 2/23 times to be exact---I would just fill it three times.
CK
(2 2/23)(2 7/8)=6
(48/23)(23/8)=6
6=6
