: Problem solving using chart:Question: Brian O'Reilly earns twice as much each week as a tutor than he does pumping gas. His total weekly wages are $150 more than that of his younger sister. She earns one quarter as much as Brian does as a tutor. How much does Brian earn as a tutor? This question is from textbook Algebra: Structure and Method

Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=amount that Brian earns as a tutor---weekly wages
Then (x/2)=amount that Brian earns pumping gas
So x+(x/2)= Brian's total weekly wages
And (x/4)=amount that Brian's sister earns
Now we are told that:
x+(x/2)=(x/4)+150 multiply both sides by 4
4x+2x=x+600 subtract x from both sides
4x+2x-x=x-x+600 collect like terms
5x=600 divide both sides by 5
x=$120------Brian's weekly wages as a tutor
(x/2)=(120/2)=$60-------------------Brian's weekly wages pumping gas
(x/4)=(200/4)=$50 ----------- Brian's sister's weekly wages
CK
$120+$60=$30+$150
$180=$180
Hope this helps---ptaylor
