Question 1054514: There were 5 times as many boys as girls in the school hall. After 270 boys and 26 girls left the hall, there was an equal number of boys and girls in the hall. How many boys were in the hall at the end.

Initially, there are 5 times as many boys, b, as girls, g:
b = 5g [1]
After 270 boys and 26 girls leave, the numbers are equal:
b - 270 = g - 26 [2]
We have two equations and two unknowns. Substituting [1] into [2] gives:
5g - 270 = g - 26
4g = 244
g = 61
Therefore the number of girls is 61 and the number of boys is 305
