I'm sure there's a formula to figure this out, but the easiest way to do this is to look at the squares.
1^2 = 1
2^2 = 4
3^2 = 9
4^2 = 16
5^2 = 25
6^2 = 36
7^2= 49
8^2 = 64
9^2 = 81
10^2 = 100
We don't need to go any higher since the sum is 106.
Use process of elimination. Can't be 10 & 6 (100+36=136). What about 9 and 5, because you know they're 4 apart. 81+25 = 106
Voila.
