these are the 2 equations u are given in the word problem:

I would start with solving 2nd equation for x

now plug into above equation

to not deal with alot of fractions multiply both sides by 3/2

add y to both sides

multiply by 10

divide by 19

to find x simply substitute y value in the 2nd equation

so lets check the question again Is two thirds of 36 equal to three fifths of 40?
2/3 of 36=(12+12+12) is 24
3/5 of 40=(8+8+8+8+8) is 24
yep this is correct.

Divide 76 into two parts so that two-thirds of one part is equalto 3/5 of the other part
Let 1st part be F
Then other part is: 76 - F
We then get: __________
5(2F) = 3(228 - 3F) ------- Cross-multiplying
10F = 684 - 9F
10F + 9F = 684
19F = 684
F, or 1st part = , or
Other part: 76 - 36, or
