Let M = maximum marks, and P = passing mark for the exam.
From the first statement, we know that he scored 0.50M, but that 0.50M + 12 = P. From the second statement we know that 1.10(0.50M) = P, or 0.55M = P.
==> 0.50M + 12 = 0.55M ==> 12 = 0.05M ==> M = 240, the maximum marks for the exam.
