A dairyman has milk which contains 4% butterfat and cream which contains 40% butterfat. How many gallons of each should he use in order to produce 36 gallons of a mixture which contains 20% butterfat?
let x=amt of 4% butterfat used in th mixture
36-x=amt of 40% butterfat used in th mixture
4%x+40%(36-x)=20%*36
.04x+14.4-.4x=7.2
.36x=7.2
x=20
36-20=16
amt of 4% butterfat used in th mixture= 20 gal
amt of 40% butterfat used in th mixture= 16 gal
