: Bryce insist that (2+x)/8 is equivlent to (1+x)/4. What mistake do you think he is making and how could you demonstrate to Bryce that the two expressions are not equivalent?
Answer by Mathtut(559) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
he seems to be simply comparing the ratios of 2/8 and 1/4 and paying no attention to the x terms........one way to prove he is wrong is to find the lcd...which is 8 in this case. once the denominators are equal we can compare the numerators
:
(2+x)/8.....eq 1
(1+x)/4--->..eq 2 multiply top and bottom by 2--->2(1+x)/8=(2+2x)/8
:
clearly 2+x is not equal to 2+2x

I get really confused when trying to set these problems up. Can you help me work this one out so I can use it for my other questions please? How many liters of a 40% alcohol solution should be mixed with 40 liters of a 90% solution to get a 50% solution? Thanks for your help.

Make this chart:

               | liters |  %  | pure alcohol
--------------------------------------------
1st solution   |        |     |
2nd solution   |        |     |
---------------|--------|-----|-------------
final solution |        |     |

Let x = liters of 1st solution
and we are given that there are 40 liters
of the 2nd solution, so fill in x and 40
liters.

               | liters |  %  | pure alcohol
--------------------------------------------
1st solution   |    x   |     |
2nd solution   |   40   |     |
---------------|--------|-----|-------------
final solution |        |     |

Add the two to get x+40 liters of final solution.

               | liters |  %  | pure alcohol
--------------------------------------------
1st solution   |    x   |     |
2nd solution   |   40   |     |
---------------|--------|-----|-------------
final solution | x+40   |     |

Put in the three percentages as decimals:

               | liters |  %  | pure alcohol
--------------------------------------------
1st solution   |    x   | .40 |
2nd solution   |   40   | .90 |
---------------|--------|-----|-------------
final solution | x+40   | .50 |

Now get the amount of pure alcohol contained
in each by multiplying by the percentage as
a decimal.

               | liters |  %  | pure alcohol
--------------------------------------------
1st solution   |    x   | .40 |      .40x
2nd solution   |   40   | .90 |   .90(40)
---------------|--------|-----|-------------
final solution | x+40   | .50 | .50(x+40)

The equation comes from the last column:

.40x + .90(40) = .50(x+40)

Can you solve that for x? If not post again.

answer:  x = 160 liters

The French students are included with the languages, so we have:
x = 1/2x + 1/7x + 20
Multiply equation by 14
14x = 7x + 2x + 280
:
14x - 9x = 280
x = 280/5
x = 56 students

Answer by ptaylor(1332) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let w=Slick Jim's initial winnings
1. He spent (2/3)w on a posh house and had (w-(2/3)w)=(1/3)w left
2. He spent (2/3)*(1/3)w=(2/9)w on a luxury yacht and had ((1/3)w-(2/9)w)=
(3/9)w-(2/9)w=(1/9)w left
3. He spent (2/3)*(1/9)w=(2/27)w on a hot air baloon and had ((1/9)w-(2/27)w)=
(3/27)w-(2/27)w=(1/27)w left and we are told that this equals £20000, so our equation to solve is:
(1/27)w=£20000 multiply each term by 27
w=£540,000-------------------------------------his winnings
CK
(2/3)*540,000=360,000; 540,000-360,000=180,000
(2/3)*180,000=120,000; 180,000-120,000=60,000
(2/3)*60,000=40,000; 60,000-40,000=20,000

1.14x + 399.50 = 481.58 __ 1.14x = 82.08 __ x = 72 (wheat)

425 - (72) = 353 (oats)

Answer by Earlsdon(3748) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = the number of liters of pure (100%) ethyl alcohol to be added to the 50 liters of 70% ethyl alcohol solution to obtain 50+x liters of 80% ethyl alcohol solution.
Change the percentages to their decimal equivalents:
70% = 0.7
80% = 0.8
Now you can write the equation to sove for x:
50(0.7)+x = (50+x)(0.8) Simplify.
35+x = 40+0.8x Subtract 0.8x from both sides.
35+0.2x = 40 Subtract 35 from both sides.
0.2x = 5 Divide both sides by 0.2
x = 25

The student has a 1/5 chance of getting any certain question right
The sudent wants to repeat this lucky guess 7 times
This is like rolling a 5-sided dice 7 times and getting the same
number each time
The probability is
1/5 * 1/5 * 1/5 * 1/5 * 1/5 * 1/5 * 1/5 = 1/15625
That's my guess, but I'm often wrong on probability
questions, so get another opinion

Answer by gonzo(474) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let d = drum capacity.
3/5 * d - 38 = 1/8 * d
subtract 1/8 * d from both sides of equation:
3/5 * d - 1/8 * d - 38 = 0
add 38 to both sides of equation:
3/5 * d - 1/8 * d = 38
3/5 = 24/40
1/8 = 5/40
equation becomes:
24/40 * d - 5/40*d = 38
simplify:
d*(24-5)/40 = 38
19*d/40 = 38
multiply both sides of equation by 40
19*d = 40*38
divide both sides of equation by 19
d = 40*38/19 = 40*2 = 80
-----
capacity of the drum is 80 liters.
half capacity of the drum is 40 liters.

Answer by Mathtut(559) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
100-40=60%
100-30=70%
100-10=90%
in decimal form these are .6,.7,and .9 respectively
let x be the original cost
multiply these together .6(.7)(.9)x=.378x 37.8% of x is the new cost of the item.
:
In order to get the discount percentage you must
take 100% and subtract out the new cost %(37.8%)=62.2% or.622

Question 168781: Find the decimal equivalent of the new price for a 40/15/5 series trade discount.: Find the decimal equivalent of the new price for a 40/15/5 series trade discount.
Answer by gonzo(474) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
as best i can determine, a 40/15/5 series trade discount would be calculated as follows:
let x = retail price.
x - .40*x = y = first discounted price.
y - .15*y = z = second discounted price.
z - .05*z = t = total discounted price.
-----
x - .4*x = (1-.4)*x = .6*x = y
y - .15*y = (1-.15)*y = .85*y = z
z - .05*z = (1-.05)*z = .95*z = t
----
since z = .85*y, then .95*z = .95*.85*y
since y = .6*x, then .95*z = .95*.85*.6*x
-----
based on the above, then t = total discount = .95*.85*.6*x = .4845*x
40/15/5 series discount is equivalent to a total discount of 48.45%
-----
first discount is taken off the retail price.
second discount is taken off the first discount price.
third discount is taken off the second discount price.
-----
example:
retail price = $20,192.00
first discount price = .6 * $20,192.00 = $12,115.20
second discount price = .85 * $12115.20 = $10,297.92
third discount price = .95 * $10,297.92 = $9,783.02
-----
overall discount price = .4845 * $20,192.00 = $9,783.02
-----
