Question 874272: If only given the measures of the sides of a trapezoid, with no area, how would you calculate the height or altitude of the trapezoid? Length of larger base is 35, length of smaller base is 19 and the sides connecting the two bases are congruent each with a measure of 17.

We may call it an isosceles trapezoid since the non parallel sides are congruent
A right triangle is formed when the altitude is drawn from smaller side on the longer side
let height be h
hypotenuse = 17
base =?
35-19 = 16
b= 16/2 = 8
so
8^2+h^2=17^2
17^2-8^2=h^2
h^2=225
h=15 units
