Multiply the whole number part by the fraction's denominator.
Add that to the numerator
Write that result on top of the denominator
so 12 2/5 = [ 12*5 +2]/5 = [60+2]/5 = 62/5
1 3/5 = [1*5+3]/5 = [ 5+3]/5 = 8/5
12 2/5- 1 3/5 = (62/5)-(8/5)
