a fraction becomes 1/3 when 1is subtracted from the numerator
=
cross multiply
1d = 3(n-1)
d = 3n - 3
and it becomes 1/4 when 8is added to its denominator.
=
cross multiply
4n = (d+8)
replace d with (3n-3)
4n = (3n-3) + 8
4n = 3n - 3 + 8
4n - 3n = 5
n = 5 is the numerator
find d
d = 3(5) - 3
d = 15 - 3
d = 12 is the denominator
