What the restaurant asks is impossible. Since is a transcendental irrational number, it cannot be expressed exactly. Your only option is to convince the restaurant to change their pricing policy. My strategy would be to take out some paper and a pencil and, using any one of several formulas for calculating , begin to calculate ( formulas). Inform the restaurant that you have no intention of leaving the establishment until you have calculated exactly what is owed, and, furthermore, the restaurant is responsible for your food, lodging, clothing, and incidental living expenses for the duration of the time it takes for you to complete the task. Since they are certain to recognize that the time to calculate an infinite number of decimal digits must, perforce, be infinite, I'm sure they will change their billing policy and allow you to make a payment that approximates the requested amount.
