Question 878319: Jim, ken, and max have a bag of miniature candy bars. Jim takes 1/4 of all the bars, and ken and len each take 1/3 of all the bars. Max gets the remaining 4 bars. How many bars were there in the bag originally? How many bars did jim, ken, and len each get? I tried adding 1/4, 1/3, 1/3, and 4 and I got 4 11/12, which doesn't seem right.

Jim takes 1/4 of all the bars, and ken and len each take 1/3 of all the bars. Max gets the remaining 4 bars.
How many bars were there in the bag originally?
How many bars did jim, ken, and len each get?:
;
Let x = total no. of bars
x = x + x + 4
multiply by 12, cancel the denominators
12x = 3x + 8x + 12(4)
12x = 11x + 48
12x - 11x = 48
12x - 9x = 8x
x = 48 bars originally
then
* 48 = 12 for jim
* 48 = 16 for len & ken
:
:
Check 12 + 16 + 16 + 4 = 48
