The easiest way to do this type of problem is to convert it all into 5ths.

5 1/5 is the same as 26/5. (5 wholes which are 5/5 each, + 1/5)
3 3/5 is the same as 18/5. (3 wholes which are 5/5 each, + 3/5)
Now subtract:
26 - 18 = 8
8/5 reduces to 1 whole (5/5) + 3/5.
1 3/5
