the fraction 5/5 is the same value as 1, because 5 divided by 5 equals 1.
the other way to do this problem is to use improper fractions.
30/5-21/5=9/5
9/5 reduced equals 1 4/5.

2 3/3-2 1/3=2/3
or
9/3-7/3=2/3

That is a very convenient way of doing those calculations, but I would say that the way the numbers like are written is unusual.

but I had never seen
written as .
I would not call it wrong, but it is unusual.
That said, to subtract from ,
you could subtract the from the to get ,
and the from the to get .


If someone writes as , I will think it is weird,
but I will not complain.
So the same person will probably write

One is subtracted from the other,
and the is subtracted from the .

The way shown above is the way I do the calculations when I have to do them in my head.
The way I was taught to do that kind of calculation is harder.
The teacher would make us transform the both numbers into fractions with the same denominator.
Then we would subtract.
After that we would transform the fraction back into a mixed number if necessary.
So we would write
